Oceanna Fair is a retired nurse whose grand daughter and brother fall victim to lead poisoning in the south side of Syracuse, NY. Since her grand daughter was diagnosed with lead poisoning, she has fought to make her and fellow residents voices heard within local and state governments.

Discussions to remove or renovate the I-81 viaduct continues to be the focal point of a heated discussion since at least 2006. Proponents of the highway’s removal state that the viaduct displaced black communities and left them at a greater risk of asthma and lead poisoning. However, those who want to keep I-81 intact also say that it adds extra mileage for travelers and diverts traffic from downtown and prominent shopping centers by pushing traffic to suburbs.
